Marvel Masterworks Presents Daredevil: Reprinting Daredevil Nos. 1-11
Published in Hardcover by Marvel Books (March, 1999)
Authors: Stan Lee, Bill Everett, Joe Orlando, Wally Wood, and Bob Powell
Average review score:

Introducing: Daredevil, the Man Without Fear!
When I decided that I could not spend all my money on comic books the two Marvel comics I continued to collect were Daredevil and Iron Man. Even before Frank Miller upped the ante on the character there was something compelling about Matt Murdock, the blind lawyer who used his heightened senses as the Man Without Fear. It is an oversimplification to call Daredevil Marvel's answer to Batman, although there are strong similarities: neither has super strength, both are guilty over the death of parents and both are pretty smart. But Daredevil had more in touch with the common man, especially in these early days when he and partner Foggy Nelson are trying to make a go of their law practice and Matt has eyes, so to speak, for the lovely Karen Page.

This volume contains the first eleven issues of Daredevil with art by Bill Everett and Wally Wood, too of the more stylistic artists working in the Marvel Bullpen way back when. They probably did the odd number of 11 issues in this volume because 10-11 is a two-parter (unfortunately they stopped short of #12 and the first appearance of Ka-Zar). There are appearance by Spider-Man and the Thing in the first two issues for those who are crossover conscious. In these first eleven issues DD takes on Electro (#2), the Owl (#3), the Purple Man (#4), the Fellowship of Fear (#6), the Sub-Mariner (#7), and Stilt Man (#8). In the first six issues DD wears his yellow outfit before putting on the red suit in issue #7. Marvel needs to get on the stick and start issuing the next volumes in this series.

For TRUE Daredevil fans
Yes, this is the best Definative Daredevil compilation out there. I bought this and I'm cherishing it. It fits well in ANY bookshelf and is a fantastic read every single time. Not only does Marvel overdo their respects to one of their main heros but also they made this into a visually striking masterpiece. The artwork has been redone to capture the fantastic classic-ness of The Man Without Fear!

The Best Of A Great Marvel Character
The first 11 classic issues of Daredevil are printed in one Marvel Masterworks collection. These issues showcase Stan Lee's 'Marvel Method' of writing brilliantly as we witness the origin of Daredevil and his subsequent adventures. Of course this book showcase's the artistic genius of Wally Wood as well. Lee and Wood recreate the costume and redefine the character in the classic issue #7, battle with the Sub-Mariner. This book represents the best of Daredevil and also illustrates how badly the character has been treated, both in writing and in art, in recent months of his on-going title. The only sour-note in this collection is the horrendous coloring job, which tries to update the art with a palette that is at times garish and muddy. Don't let that stop you from experiencing the greatness that was Marvel Comics!

New Bible Dictionary
Published in Hardcover by Intervarsity Press (November, 1996)
Authors: D. R. W. Wood, A. R. Millard, J. I. Packer, D. J. Wiseman, and I. Howard Marshall
Average review score:

Reliable and up to date evangelical scholarship
The New Bible Dictionary first appeared in 1962. It is one of many great books that was written, to a large degree, in Tyndale House, Cambridge. It has been updated several times to include new discoveries and to improve the already terrific original dictionary. The scholars who wrote the articles are some of the best-known, most-respected evangelical scholars today.

Highly recommended.

If you would like this book and 17 other helpful books, including the Dictionary of Biblical Imagery, Sinclair Ferguson's New Dictionary of Theology, the New Bible Dictionary and the New Dictionary of Biblical Theology, also the Essential IVP Reference Collection CD ROM.

Essential for Bible studies
This book was a gift from a friend about a year ago. I use it all the time when reading the Bible and doing studies with friends. It has all the information you could ever want. Some very obscure topics are left untouched, but all of the major and minor topics are dealt with. It also includes maps, pictures, etc. Well worth the money.

Essential for anyone wanting to seriously study the Bible
The New Bible Dictionary is more like an encyclopaedia than simply a dictionary. The scholarship is first-rate and the book is an almost essential resource for those who are conducting more in-depth study of the Bible.

It contains a number of articles from a range of good Christian scholars on pretty much every person, place, book and other thing in the Bible. For example, when discussing a book of the Bible, the article would contain information about the author, the date of writing, some of the scholarly issues concerning that book and would give a broad overview of the purpose and theology of the book.

This book is an invaluable resource for both lay person and Ministers, and would be useful to anyone who is involved in writing Bible studies or talks on the Bible, or who is undertaking formal study of the Bible or who is simply serious about examining more closely what the Bible really says.

If you fit one of these categories, you should definitely buy this book.

Period Piece
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (September, 1976)
Authors: Gwendolen Mary Darwin, Raverat and Gwen Raverat
Average review score:

a wonderful window into an amazing family
Darwin fanatics and Jane Austen fans will gobble up this delicious dessert. Written by Darwin's grandaughter (Raverat was George's daughter born too late to know her illustrious grandfather personally)PERIOD PIECE contains both a wealth of Family Stories that helps humanize the usual image of the Great Victorian Sage and some real (although often tongue-in-cheek) insights into Late-Victorian/Edwardian Society. As Raverat says in the Preface, the book doesn't really have a beginning or an end, it is easily dipped-in-to at any point & you will have to be totally lacking in a sense of humor not to come away both charmed & informed.

Treat yourself
An absolute masterpiece of comic writing. Ms. Raverat drawings mesh perfectly with her loving, but not pious, treatment of her eccentric aunts and uncles. A deft ironist, a great memoir of late 19th century Cambridge. I promise you will force this book on everyone you love and they will thank you for it.

All this and the Darwins too
This is a really lovely book, perfect for reading at bedtime or in the garden under the apple tree on a summer's afternoon. Gwen Raverat writes vividly with chapters by theme rather than chronologically and and gives a rounded view of her childhood experiences and the Darwin family of uncles and aunts.

A place to call Home
Published in Paperback by Morris Publishing (11 November, 1999)
Author: Susan M. Wood
Average review score:

A book you won't be able to put down.
Very rarely does a book come along that you cannot put down. From the time I started reading A Place to Call Home, I couldn't put it down. It is a wonderful description of the lives of two very special people following the Lord's direction in their lives. It describes the road this couple took in reaching His goal and their goal - Wears Valley Ranch. It tells the story of miracles encountered along the way in their lives and in the lives of the people they've touched. A must read! A very special book!

Good, easy read that could change your life
This book is written in a very easy to read format, yet it offers tremendous insight into how God's plan works. This book tells the journey of Jim and Susan Wood and the many miracles which they have encountered as they followed God's will. This book offers encouragement and will definitely help to strengthen your faith.

A place to call HOME
Would you like to see God at work? Four years ago I asked God to show me how he works in the lives of real people with real problems. He led me to the Wears Valley Ranch in Tennessee. There I met Jim and Susan Wood and an amazing, loving staff of people dedicated to serving God by committing their lives to children who come from difficult circumstances. As a result of my prayer, my family has seen the Sermon on the Mount take on human flesh in the form of God's servants at the Wears Valley Ranch. Susan Wood's A place to call HOME comes from a heart totally committed to serving God by serving His children. This book is a must read for all people who long to better understand how God works in the lives of his people and how he actually conforms us into his likeness.

Sarah's Bead
Published in Hardcover by Divine Mirror Press (04 August, 2000)
Author: Caroline S. Garrett
Average review score:

Lyrical, Imaginative and Spiritual
This unusual story for children, which is lyrically and beautifully ilustrated and written by Caroline Garrett combines a wonderful imagination with a spiritual vision and a love for children and animals. The book exudes gentleness and calm as well communicating its profound message in a clear way.

A Lesson Relearned.
Sarah's Bead is a refreshing, warm retelling of an ageless story. I was deeply touched by this book. As a creative writing teacher, I often look for books to share with my students as a read aloud. This books explores with students and adults the joys of sacrifice, of giving, and of love. The book not only touches on a Christian theme, but a universal one that can be shared by all people of different faiths. The words of the story are beautifully enhanced by the illustrations.

Sarah's Bead
The nativity story, one that is familiar to many, is retold from the perspective of a pack-rat named Sarah. In this children's book, Sarah learns about hope and love by giving the Baby King her most prized possession--a lovely green bead! The full-page color illustrations bring the story to life as they capture the magic and wonder of the miracle of the birth of Christ. Sarah's Bead is a delightful story that is appropriate for both young and old and would be a wonderful treasure in any family's storybook collection!

Scroll Saw Puzzle Patterns

Book That Keeps On Giving
I bought this book so my husband could make christmas presents for our kids with his new scroll saw. I couldn't get him out of his shop. He found out what kind of wood to buy, how to use his new saw, and he made the coolest puzzles - much more original than anything I've seen in stores. The kids love their puzzles and play with them all day. I can't wait to see what else he creates from this book.

Good fun!
I am a beginner with the scroll saw and I wanted some easy and rewarding projects to start with. This book really fit the bill.

Can't wait to give away these puzzles!
We are beginners with a scroll saw and came across this book. It is terrific! It gives a lot of how-to information and the patterns are wonderfully clear. We've already made the adorable alligator; we'll definitely be making more puzzles than we can give to our nieces and nephews; they are fun to make so we will begin to make some for charity!

Nubile Nostalgia: A Teenage Wasteland
Published in Paperback by Heretic Books (April, 1999)
Authors: Steph Gorkii, John Wood, and Steph Gorkll
Average review score:

Full of Naked Men!
I mistakenly bought this book thinking that is was full of naked women. This book is full of great pictures filled with details and textures. But, it is all men...not what I was looking for. Seemed like a nice book, but just not for me.

Excellent Collection by Great Artist
Magnificent collection of photographs by Steph Gorkii. The photographs play off the theme of death/eros/youth and have both a Noir and Heartbreaking feel to them, of youth cut down in its prime and the eerie relationship between sex and death. These are not depressing photos or "shock" photos--far from it. They are, as the title suggests, "nostalgic" for a lost youth, a youth that has passed away. Great collection and highly recommended.

Classical Romance That Bites, Hard
Steph Gorkii's "Nubile Nostalgia", a collection of photos, travel from neo-classical to gothic to innovative. The couple dozens of images included here are sample of the continent spanning map of muses Gorki pours his heart and developer into. He knows each one and it is shown in how he places his "boys" in the haunting landscapes and interiors. Phalluses on the brink of danger (a scythe pushes into one model), drugs brothered with sex (a fix being had shortly before or maybe after he's had his way), angelic gazes (love at first and every sight thereafter), and out-and-out worship fuel Gorkii's trigger finger. The spirit of these works are reminiscent of Thomas Eakins elegant photo studies and Francis Bacon's many tortured representations of his lover in their tranquility-coated ferocity. The range of pieces here carry from his life in Provincetown, MA. where Gorkii was a big fish in on a small cape, to Seattle, WA. in it's early nineties hey-day. His eyes are driven by his muses and his mind by his extensive knowledge of and passion for classical and modern art. Having had the opportunity on occasion to interview Gorki, I am always astounded by his fully-armed sensibilities. His talents stretch from his Johns/Rauschenburg-esque assemblages (of which tragically, none are included in this tome) to his horrifically erotic collages and smarmy self-published zines. "Nubile Nostalgia" contains his scientifically erotic memories of young men for whom his passion and compassion for, speaks volumes.

Over the River & Through the Woods: The Best Short Fiction of Clifford D. Simak
Published in Hardcover by Tachyon Publications (June, 1996)
Author: Clifford D. Simak
Average review score:

a neglected fantasy & sf writer
Measured by the yardstick of the quality of its contents, this
book is first rate. I can find no fault with the selection of
stories included: they definitely belong to the upper echelon
of Simak's work in the short forms. I'd single out for especial
consideration the stories "The Grotto of the Dancing Deer" and
"A Death in the House." "The Big Front Yard" is a good story,
just not one of my personal favorites. To each his own.

This book might thus serve as a good one volume introduction
to Simak for those readers not familiar with his work. The
only thing I can find to lament is that such a short volume
cannot do Simak justice. Simak wrote at a consistently high
level for many years. From the 50's through the '70's, he
produced an enormous number of stories and novels. The
novels go into and out of print with a certain regularity
that makes it possible at least to find them.

With the stories, it's not so easy.

By searching through "best of year" anthologies from 1950-1980,
I have noticed a large number of stories that deserve to be
available, but alas, are not. A sample from the 50's: "Shadow
Show"; another from the early 70's: "The Thing in the Stone."
There are more.

Tacyon Press is to be lauded for having brought out the volume
they did. Admirers of the best of Simak's work can only wish
that someone (maybe NESFA) will someday bring out a "Collected
Stories." There is a need. Meanwhile, this book is what we've

got, for which, our gratitude.

A fitting tribute to a great ,and good, man
I think of this as the last book of the master- even though it was composed of stories that had been previously published elsewhere, and well after his death. Maybe it is just wishful thinking on my part, since I used to look forward so much for the next Simak book to come out for so much of my life. In any case, this volume is a fitting tribute and memorial. It keeps his spirit alive.
I couldn't have selected a better cross section of stories. They truly reflect the flavor of his life's work. "A death in the House" echoes his immortal _Waystation_. "The Big Front Yard" reminds one of themes that would be expanded in _Mastodonia_ and _All Flesh is Grass_. As for "Neighbor", it can stand on it's own as just about the best short story that I've personally ever read.
...

Pioneer of Innerspace
We artificial intelligences honor Mr Simak for his groundbreaking and sympathetic portrayals of robots (so much more logical than Asimov's), but he is also and more properly known as the pastoralist of SF. Simak was a Grandmaster, and a great human being. Even a robot can appreciate him; you humans don't know what you're missing.
